UCL MOTIONINPUT
UCL MOTIONINPUT
MotionInput was my MSc project at UCL in collaboration with Microsoft Applied Sciences. I led front-end design and development, transforming MotionInput from an academic prototype into a user-focused product that shipped on the Microsoft Store.

I evaluated how existing gesture-control interfaces worked and identified barriers for new users. My research highlighted that MotionInput’s fragmented builds and unclear UI made it inaccessible, despite powerful underlying technology. I set out to create a cohesive user experience optimised for gesture control.

The design focused on consistency, accessibility and intuitive interaction. I implemented Microsoft’s Fluent Design System and introduced a flexible component library. To help users navigate without traditional input devices, I developed a new UI element: one-at-a-time highlighted sticky buttons that improved feedback and reduced errors.

I standardised the interface across 17 micro-applications, ensuring cohesion and ease of use. I created scalable UI templates and floating panels optimised for gesture input, while also tailoring versions for clients like the NHS, IBM and Sony. Throughout, I worked within performance and security constraints, ensuring compatibility on NHS systems and delivering polished interfaces ready for public release.

Prototype
Prototype
MotionInput was about transforming an experimental research tool into a usable product that anyone could operate. The final result included bespoke gesture-driven interfaces, new interaction patterns, and a component library that gave consistency to every build. The work culminated in publication to the Microsoft Store and a presentation to Microsoft leadership.
